Using GPR technology to increase safety and reduce equipment damage and site risks

Stuart McCurdy, Reuben Barnes

Abstract

This paper will highlight the new advances in Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology and software processing which complement traditional Electromagnetic (EM) utility locating methods. GPR allows for mapping of abandoned utilities as well as metallic and non-metallic utilities. Using case studies, we will show new data collection options, in-field target visualization and post-processing techniques to generate a complete underground picture. This is relevant to the Trenchless Technology industry as it provides real-world examples of how GPR is used to enhance safety, reduce liability and minimize equipment damage on trenchless projects.
