Ultra Low Carbon Jacking Pipes

Yann Rouillard, Alexandre Soissons

Abstract

As part of a design and build contract, BESSAC built a 1600 mm ID micro-tunnel using Ultra Low Carbon jacking pipes: This is a world first ! This project is part of the upgrading works of the Bonneuil-en-France (France) wastewater treatment plant, which aims to increase its treatment capacity in the context of a growing population. This 920 m long microtunnel, completed in one single drive (which was never before done in France in 1600 mm ID), will allow the discharge of treated water to the Seine by connecting to the Garges-Epinay sewer main. To achieve this performance, BESSAC in collaboration with the Materials Engineering Department of Vinci Construction and Solétanche-Bachy has developed a concrete formula 4 times less CO2 emissive than those generally used for pre-casted jacking pipes. This formula was obtained by recombining a blast furnace cement: using a CEMI cement (20%) and slag (80%) in a controlled manufacturing process ensuring a high level of mechanical performance (compressive strength class C50/60). This approach is part of BESSAC's objective to reduce its carbon footprint by 40% by 2030.
