The Variability of Flexural Properties Within CIPP Field Samples

Abstract
A critical component of CIPP installation quality assurance is the accurate measurement of flexural properties from field samples. This study quantifies the extent of property variation within typical CIPP field samples and compares results against well-controlled manufacturing processes. Testing of resin-felt and fiber-reinforced CIPP systems revealed coefficients of variation for flexural modulus ranging from 0.06 to 0.46—representing 2 to 15 times greater variability than factory-manufactured PVC pipe. Unrestrained field samples showed even higher variation, with up to 100% differences in flexural modulus within a single sample. The research demonstrates that standard five-specimen testing protocols may not adequately capture material heterogeneity, potentially compromising design verification. Practical recommendations are provided for improved sampling strategies, specimen preparation methods, and quality control procedures to enhance CIPP installation reliability.
