Abstract
The design of liners for the rehabilitation of fully deteriorated host pipes for non-pressure pipelines requires the designer to assess all external loads including soil and live loads and external groundwater pressure. The treatment of soil loads in particular is often the subject of debate and various existing standards and specifications in use throughout Australia and New Zealand include different and sometimes confusing requirements. The ASTT recently published a specification for the design of circular liners for non-pressure applications and in the course of preparing this document it was necessary to address this along with other issues. This paper explains the logic behind what was adopted in this specification and the related issues with regards how soil loads can and should be calculated. The paper also explains how this issue is considered in overseas publications relevant to liner design and in part where further knowledge can be obtained. The aim of the paper is to explain the relevant issues which along with the published ASTT Specification can hopefully lead to more cost-effective designs for liners and for the asset manager more km of lined pipeline.
