Abstract
Due to aging infrastructure in our cities, the increase of urban densities and heightened environmental awareness the use of Trenchless Technology is being considered more and more for the installation of new utility assets as well as the need to augment/replace/upgrade existing assets. Even though there are significant benefits in utilising Trenchless Technology it brings its own set of challenges and risks that need to be appropriately managed for a successful outcome. Drawing on experience as a Contractor, client and consultant, this paper discusses how appropriate planning, design, contract structure, governing documentation and the input from experienced resources throughout planning / delivery can lead to a successful outcome for both the client and Contractor. Areas discussed are as follows: • How targeted work in the planning, design and delivery phases can ultimately reduce the overall cost of delivery as well as the risk profile; • What information is required to be able to produce a low risk constructible design; • The importance of the preferred methodology and the market’s capability. • How to determine the appropriate contract structure for project; • The importance of robust documentation (Scope of Work, Tender Documents, Geology and Specification); and • The importance of client representation during delivery;
