Abstract
The amount of wastewater being collected and treated has increased significantly as Auckland’s north-west residential regions have expanded. To cater for this future growth in Auckland and free up exiting Wastewater Treatment Plants, the NZ$108 million Northern Interceptor wastewater pipeline was proposed in order to redirect wastewater flows from Massey North, Whenuapai, Hobsonville, Kumeu, Huapai and Riverhead to the Rosedale Wastewater Treatment Plant, located on Auckland’s North Shore. The project which involves around nine kilometres of wastewater pipe and four kilometres of water main. Five kilometres of the waste water pipeline was delivered by HDD technology in 2019 by HDI Lucas. This included a triple crossing of DN500 pipes of more than 1100m length across Waitematā Harbour in a compound curve. Key Points of Interest The focus of this paper will be on Project Delivery. This project was one of the most significant HDD projects completed in the region. It was technically difficult requiring multiple interfaces with logistics, environment and simultaneous operations.
