Impact of Ground Movements on Close-Fitting Liners Spanning Across Joints and Ring Fractures
Ian D. Moore
Abstract
Ground movements caused by seasonal impacts, vehicle loading, or excavations and other construction operations will lead to extension, rotation and shear deformations across joints or ring fractures in the host pipes. This paper summarizes results from analytical and numerical investigations to quantify the stresses and/or strains where the liner spans across that joint or fracture. Firstly, the kinematic demands across the joint are defined, and relevant literature is summarized. Next, the impact of the joint deformations on liners in both pressure pipes and gravity flow sewers and culverts is examined. This includes stretching of the liner where the joint or ring fracture is opening under axial extension, and stresses where rotation is imposed. The solutions are illustrated by means of figures plotting example calculations and normalized quantifies expressed as functions of dimensionless variables.
