Abstract
Guided Auger Boring is a trenchless method for accurately (+-25 mm) installing pipes in the ground. There are two different categories of guided auger boring: the Pilot Pipe method for displaceable soils and the Front Steer Method for harder ground and rock. These two methods are different solutions for different ground conditions. The pilot pipe method is limited to ground conditions with SPT values less than or equal to 35, with no cobbles bigger than 80 mm and a drive length less than 100 m. If the ground is not displaceable or if the ground is soft and hard rock then choice would be to switch to the Front Steer system. With the Front Steer system the ground is immediately excavated by the cutting head, removed by the augers and any correcting of the drilling direction is done by the outer steering pipe of the Front Steer. The sizes of the Front Steer system reach from 324 mm OD up to 1.014 mm OD. It can handle soils, soft rock up to 30 MPa and equipped with DTH hammer hard rock up to 250 MPa. With both methods the pilot pipe method and the Front Steer method it is now possible to install small diameter lines in all ground conditions. Even sewer systems with small diameter lines using concrete, GRP, clay or plastic pipes can now be installed by these trenchless methods. 1 No-Dig Down Under 2023 Guided Auger Boring in All Ground Conditions Dr. Heinz Plum
