Geopolymers Benefit to Trenchless Technologies

Darsh Dalal, Steve Henning

Abstract

In Australia total length of sewer pipe is over 110,000 kms. This does not include storm water assets. Majority of the assets are now ageing and due to corrosion issues these assets are in dire need for replacement. A study conducted in 2001, estimated failure of water/wastewater pipeline alone to be $250 million per annum. In addition if these assets are to be replaced there will be significant disruption to the community members. Our community is looking at organisations to provide innovative solutions that can increase the asset life for years while providing minimum disruption. Trenchless industry has provided that solution to the community and now trenchless industry is in need of a product that can be applied to any shape of the asset and can also be utilised as a structural product while providing sustainable benefits. Over the last decade, geopolymers have become a cost-effective and environmentally responsible structural rehabilitation solution, as well as being a viable addition to established materials and processes. Geopolymers are often used when pipes are highly deteriorated, exhibit high ovality, are non-round by design, or where there are changes in size, shape or material in a single pipe length. Geopolymers are especially well-suited for highly corrosive environments and work extremely well in storm infrastructure due to their abrasion resistance. Geopolymers also respond well industrial settings, where flow concentrations and temperatures are of concern. The paper will also address the true definition of geopolymer as it is important to differentiate a geopolymer from cementitious product and other similar materials.
