First Installation of a PE100 HSCR Pipe by Horizontal Directional Drilling in Yeppoon QLD
Dr Jeroen Wassenaar
Abstract
The Livingstone Shire located on Queensland’s Capricorn Coast is experiencing gradual population growth and is investing to augment the capacity of its potable water distribution infrastructure. The crossing of Causeway Lake estuary represents an important connection of which capacity expansion was limited as the ductile iron pipework was embedded in a bridge structure. The Council opted for the installation of two polyethylene pipelines by horizontal directional drilling (HDD) to increase hydraulic capacity and allow for repairs to the aged bridge structure. The challenging ground conditions consisting of a combination of high strength shale rock and water charged sand increased the risk for damage to the pipe during HDD installation. Polyethylene with high stress-crack resistance (PE100 HSCR) was specified as pipe material to address this risk and achieve the required design life. The DN315 and DN450 Millennium PE100 HSCR pipes manufactured by Iplex were successfully pulled through over a distance of 380m with the project completed in October 2017, representing the first installation of a PE100 HSCR pipe in Australia.
