Experimental Investigation on Soil-Pipe Friction of HDPE-Coated Pipes Installed by Horizontal Directional Drilling
Daniel Wilmsmeier, Martin Achmus
Abstract
This paper presents investigations on friction forces of district heating pipelines after trenchless installation using the HDD technology. Nowadays the interaction between trenchless installed district heating pipes and the surrounding soil is not clearly understood. In experimental tests, especially in modified direct shear tests, the coefficient of friction between polyethylene coating and soil, saturated with drill mud was determined. The influence of the drill mud could be identified by comparing the test results to the coefficient of friction between soil and polyethylene without drill mud. In addition to these tests a model testing device was developed, wherein a district heating pipe was installed trenchlessly and subsequently loaded with cyclic displacement. Thereby, the force response due to cyclic loading was measured. It could be shown, that the installation method has a significant influence on the friction force acting on the pipe and therefore has to be accounted for within the design process. Paper 1311 - 1
