Classification of Concrete Wastewater Infrastructure Corrosivity
Marjorie Valix, James Gardner, Ye Jun In, Cherdphong Seedao
Abstract
This research paper proposes the quantitative corrosion classification of the internal environments of sewer network. The classification was undertaken from field investigation of the corrosion effects of sewer environments on concrete materials in sewer assets across Australia. The concrete materials examined included general purpose concrete and commercially available geopolymer and calcium aluminate cement mortars. Tests were performed primarily in live and large diameter sewer pipe tunnels (> 1.8 m ID) and access chambers. The corrosivity of sewer conditions were defined based on H2S and CO2 concentrations, gas temperature and the relative humidity. Corrosivity impacts were established from the asset depth of corrosion as a function of time.
