Challenges Overcome for the successful Hertel-New York HDD Installation

Bradley Marin

Abstract

The Hertel–New York Interconnection Project is a transformative clean energy initiative enabling the delivery of over 1.25 GW of renewable hydroelectricity from Québec to New York City via the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE). The Québec portion, managed by Hydro-Québec and engineered by GHD Ltd., includes a challenging Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) installation beneath the ecologically sensitive Richelieu River. This paper highlights the design, execution, and innovative intersect HDD methodology used to complete twin 880 m bores, overcoming fractured bedrock and preserving biodiversity.
