ASTM F3706 – Reviewing the Key Points of the Newly Published ASTM Standard for Spray Applied Mortar Linings
Joe Royer
Abstract
In December of 2024, ASTM published a new Standard Practice for In Field Spray Applied Mortar Linings for Large Diameter Stormwater and Sewer Conduits under the number ASTM F3706-24. This is the first official ASTM Standard covering Spray applied mortar linings (SAPL) materials. This paper will review the key highlights of the new standard including (a) material and contractor qualifications and submittals, (b) minimum physical property requirements (c) methods of installation (d) design guidance and (e) on-site quality control. The paper will then review how to apply this new standard to specific large diameter stormwater and sewer rehabilitation projects. Guidance on how to apply the standard will review the critical sections of the standard and translate them into actionable specification wording and guidance assisting asset owners and engineers in translating the standard into project specifications. The paper will also review the newly updated NASSCO Performance Guideline Specification (PSG) on the same topic and demonstrate how consulting engineers and asset owners can utilize the two documents in tandem to create a high-quality project specification for SAPL mortar linings.
