Abstract
Like other construction, trade and heavy industry sectors, the trenchless industry is a male dominated world. However, as with other traditionally male industries, female participation is growing, and increasingly women are making a positive contribution to the industry in various roles. This paper will present the perspective of women in different roles, from different backgrounds, and at different life stages, and includes interviews that explore: • An introduction to the women in the industry: their backgrounds, their experiences; • How these women have become involved in the trenchless industry • Comparisons to experience in other industries; • If they have experienced any gender bias and how they have overcome this; • How they contribute to their work teams; • Personal achievements, accomplishments and the rewards of working in the industry. Drawing on more than 20 years of experience as a woman in the civil construction and design industry, it is the intention of this paper to explore the role women can play in creating better outcomes for the trenchless industry and to highlight the opportunities for women, and for the industry, that are possible when gender diversity becomes a reality and how increased women participation in the industry can be achieved. 1 No-Dig Down Under 2023 Exploring project and industry experiences through the lens of women in the trenchless industry, including discussion of positive outcomes associated with diversity in the trenchless industry.
